02 — What's inside

Six chapters. Zero filler.

Each chapter is a self-contained mini-briefing. You can read end-to-end in 20 minutes or jump straight to the section you need.

01

The 3-ring mental model

A 5-minute framework that tells you which insurances are mandatory, which are non-negotiable, and which you can safely skip — before you spend a euro.

02

Health insurance, demystified

GKV vs. PKV side-by-side. Who actually qualifies for private, the JAEG threshold for 2026, and the one question every Expat should ask before switching.

03

Liability (Haftpflicht) — the €5 insurance everyone forgets

Why this is the single best-value insurance in Germany, what the worldwide rider really means, and the three exclusions buried in most contracts.

04

Income protection (BU) — the one that gets more expensive every year

A clear chart showing how a 5-year delay can raise your lifetime premium by 30–50%, plus the medical questions that quietly kill applications.

05

Household, legal, dental — the optional layer

Honest cost ranges, when each one is worth it, and the two situations where I genuinely recommend skipping them.

06

The 7 most common Expat mistakes (and the fixes)

From signing the wrong Krankenkasse to taking advice from a Vermittler who calls himself a Makler — the patterns I see most often, in plain English.

03 — Who wrote this

Hi, I'm Florian.

I'm an independent insurance broker based in Germany. I wrote this guide because I got tired of watching Expats sign contracts they didn't understand — and pay for it for years afterwards.

I'm a Makler, not a Vermittler — meaning I work for you, not for an insurance company. I compare 50+ providers, advise in English, and never charge a fee. My income comes from the provider you eventually choose, and I'll tell you that openly on page 13 of the guide.
